Dry Needling Nepean pain therapy
What is Dry Needling or (Myofascial trigger point dry needling)
Dry needling Nepean or intramuscular stimulation is the use of thin filiform needles to penetrate the skin and underlying muscle fibres. This can be effective for treating muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. Dry needling is used to release myofascial trigger point dysfunction and pain. Your skilled practitioner will use palpation to find the pain and trigger point so the needle or needles will be most effective. This is aimed at altering the dysfunctional tissues to restore and/or improve range of motion and muscle function and reduce pain.
Conditions treated at our Dry needling Nepean pain clinic are;
Trigger points, headaches, migraines, jaw pain, muscle and joint pain, back, neck and shoulder pain, sporting overuse injuries eg hamstring strains, calf pain, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and referring pain.
We offer a range of anti-aging treatments using fine filiform needles at our Dry needling Nepean clinic, please see our cosmetic procedures page.
Trigger points or myofascial pain is often a source of pain and dysfunction in the muscles. A myofascial trigger point creates it’s own pain cycle with multiple contraction knots in the muscles. Your Dry needling therapist needs to be skilled in palpation because exact precision is needed for an effective treatment.
Trigger points can occur in muscles all over the body. Janet Travell and David Simons have been instrumental in the knowledge we have about trigger points today. They have confirmed that the following factors all help to maintain and enhance trigger point activity; low oxygenation of tissues (aggravated by tension, stress, inactivity, repetitive overuse of muscles, and poor respiration), nutritional deficiency (especially Vitamin C, B-complex and iron), hormonal imbalances (eg low thyroid, menopausal and/or premenstrual situations), infections (bacteria, viruses or yeast), allergies (wheat and dairy) acute or chronic overload and psychological stress.
Trigger points can be the cause of anything from neural pain to headaches. Your therapist needs to take the time to assess your presenting condition and underlying causes and type of the pain. Our dry needling treatments will often be enhanced by combining our other modalities, Chinese cupping and Shiatsu.
Is Dry Needling Effective? Yes with a skilled Dry Needling practitioner
Visit our Dry Needling Nepean pain clinic to help with muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. Dry Needling is an effective treatment technique developed by Dr. Chan Gunn. When performed correctly it is very effective for releasing and deactivating trigger points in the muscles. With excellent palpation skills the trigger points are found and then needled to release them. Dry needling is called dry needling because it uses needles without injection. Compared to injection needling where saline, anaesthetic or corticosteroid is injected into the affected area. Dry needling uses a solid, fine filament needle, as used in acupuncture.
Dry needling Nepean does require a skilled practitioner. I have Dry Needling skills with a sound knowledge of acupressure points resulting in an excellent approach to treating trigger points. Many trigger points are close or similar to acupressure points so this knowledge is very helpful for an effective treatment.
If the active trigger point is found and needled correctly, dry needling is very effective for releasing trigger points and stopping the pain cycle.
How does dry needling work?
In order to deactivate trigger points the exact area of pain needs to be needled, a twitch response needs to be elicited to break the pain cycle and cause favourable biochemical changes.
What are the differences between acupuncture and dry needling?
Dry needling is different from acupuncture although there are many similarities. Dry needling is a treatment on muscles to enhance the muscle’s function and acupuncture is based on the foundation of Chinese Traditional Medicine.
